Let the Debate Begin…

   Posted by: matt   in Uncategorized

I asked Erin earlier today what her five favorite albums of all time were and later posed the question to Patrick… Their answers were both strikingly different than mine… Since I could not truly narrow five, I named twelve. And so, without further ado, my top twelve albums:

  1. The Beatles- Abbey Road
  2. Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisited
  3. Radiohead- OK Computer
  4. The Beatles- Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
  5. Elliott Smith- XO
  6. Beach Boys- Pet Sounds
  7. Nickel Creek- Why Should the Fire Die?
  8. Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
  9. Bob Dylan- The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan
  10. Elliott Smith- Figure 8
  11. Van Morrison- Astral Weeks
  12. Sufjan Stevens- C’mon! Feel the Illinoise!

The next 25, in no particular order: The Beatles- The White Album; Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks; Bob Dylan- Bringing It All Back Home; Bob Dylan- The Times They Are A-Changing; Chris Thile- Deceiver; Death Cab for Cutie- Transatlanticism; Elton John- Madman Across the Water; Fleet Foxes- Fleet Foxes; Coldplay- Rush of Blood to the Head; Radiohead- Kid A; Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; U2- The Joshua Tree; Jimi Hendrix- Axis: Bold as Love; Bright Eyes- I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning; The Format- Dog Problems; Ryan Adams- Heartbreaker; Guster- Lost & Gone Forever; Sufjan Stevens- Seven Swans; The Rolling Stones- Let It Bleed; Michael Jackson- Thriller; Robert Johnson- The Complete Recordings; Iron & Wine- Our Endless Numbered Days; David Crowder Band- A Collision; Beck- Odelay

Personal Note: I am in no way trying to say these are the twelve most meritorious albums ever made, but my twelve personal favorites (eternally subject to change). I’d love to hear yours.

I don’t think this list will win me any cool points unfortunately. But, off the top of my head, without much pondering, here are 5 albums that I know I’ll never get sick of, which in my book, says a lot.

Over The Rhine–Ohio
Sufjan Stevens–Seven Swans
Sigur Ros–Agaetis Byrjun
Caedmon’s Call–Long Line of Leavers
Death Cab for Cutie–Transatlanticism

I’m giving you my top 15 (i think) in no particular order because 15 is a good, round number:

1 Postal Service- Give Up
2 Death Cab for Cutie- Transatlanticism
3 Cloud Cult- Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes)
4 Peter, Bjorn, and John- Writer’s Block
5 Bright Eyes- I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning
6 Ryan Adams- Heartbreaker
7 The Avett Brothers- Emotionalism
8 Sufjan Stevens- Michigan
9 Ella Fitzgerald- The Cole Porter Song Book
10 Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s- Dust of Retreat
11 Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
12 Of Montreal- Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer?
13 Pixies- Come On Pilgrim
14 The Velvet Underground- The Velvet Undergound & Nico
15 Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

These also are subject to change. But they’re all favorites for sure! :)

I also think Blood on the Tracks and Bringing It All Back Home would make it before Highway 61 Revisited and The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan on my list… b/c he’s on there… just not in this particular top 15, apparently

Wow. I can’t believe that I don’t have a place for The Postal Service. A grave error indeed, I’m afraid. Joseph would be quite pleased to see your selection of Cloud Cult (as Erin would be about your inclusion of Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s). And I have never, in my shame, listened to Peter, Bjorn, and John. Heretofore, I will rectify my mistake.

Lastly, I’d love to know why Bringing It & Blood on the Tracks top the list for you… I felt like what he was trying to do with Bringing It, he perfected on Highway 61. Hmm…
