Angerona Presents: Apollos Versus the Vulcan ‘09 or The White Winter Hymnal

Just to be as purely ridiculous as possible…

In keeping with a tradition I established about a year and a half ago, in a few short days, I’ll be passing out to my roommates & Erin my favorite new music of the previous season. This season’s mixtape will be unique in that, ironically (if only in my word usage), it will be simultaneously the most accessible (in that Patrick introduced me to a site where I could upload the mix & anyone anywhere could download it with relative ease) and least accessible (in that I expect the least number of you to appreciate the selections herein) mix I’ve put together thus far.

Disclaimer: If we’ve ever spoken about it, I am sure that you are aware that I am wholly against music theft. My desire in making these lists public is simply exposure- hoping that you will discover & love bands & music that you may not have been exposed to and will, thereafter, buy the music that you’ve enjoyed. Now that I’ve gotten that off my conscience… Onto the list!

  1. “No One Does It Like You” by Department of Eagles, from In Ear Park
  2. “The Gardener” by The Tallest Man on Earth, from Shallow grave
  3. “Blood Bank”- Bon Iver, from Blood Bank EP
  4. “M79″ by Vampire Weekend, from Vampire Weekend
  5. “Dog Days Are Over” by Florence and the Machine, from Dog Days Are Over- Single
  6. “Damnit Anna” by The Morning benders, from Boarded Doors

The Shack, Concluding Thoughts to Ponder

   Posted by: matt    in Uncategorized

I originally intended to dig even deeper into this book, simply due to the sheer number of people who have read it, but now, as often happens in my life, I have grown bored with such an endeavor and thus will leave the book entirely after publishing the last series of quotes that I found “discussion-worthy,” though I myself will no longer attempt to discuss them here.

p. 137

Didn’t my daughter have a right to be protected? “A child is protected because she is loved, not because she has the right to be protected.”

“Jesus didn’t hold onto any rights; he willingly became a servant and lives out of his relationship to Papa. He gave up everything, so that by his dependent life he opened a door that would allow you to live free enough to give up your rights.”

p. 138

“ This [garden that Mack & Sarayu have been working in] mess is you! Together, you and I, we have been working with a purpose in your heart. And it is wild and beautiful and perfectly in progress. To you it seems like a mess, but to me, I see a perfect pattern emerging and growing and alive- a living fractal!”

p. 162

When Mack is called to be judge,,, to save two of his kids & condemn three, as he believes God will do to the rest of the world. Fights, fights with Wisdom:

“Could I go instead?”

“Now you sound like Jesus… You have judged them worthy of love, even if cost you everything. That is how Jesus loves.”

p. 169

“Judgment is not about destruction, but about setting things right”

p. 182

“Those who love me come from every system that exists. They were Buddhists or Mormons, Baptists or Muslims, Democrats, Republicans… Jews and Palestinians…”

“Does that mean,” asked Mack, “that all roads will lead to you?”

“Not at all,” smiled Jesus as he reached for the door handle to the shop. “Most roads don’t lead anywhere. What it does mean is that I will travel any road to find you.”

p. 191

“All things must unfold, even though it puts all those I love in the midst of a horrible tragedies- even the one closest.”

p. 192

“Like I said, everything is about him. Creation and history are all about Jesus. He is the very center of our purpose and in him we are now fully human, so our purpose and your destiny are forever linked. You might say that we have put all our eggs in the one human basket. There is no plan B.”

“Seems pretty risky,” Mack surmised.

“Maybe for you, but not for me. There has never been a question that what I wanted from the beginning, I will get […] Honey, you asked me what Jesus accomplished on the cross; so now listen to me carefully: through his death and resurrection, I am now fully reconciled to the world […] Reconciliation is a two-way street, and I have done my part, totally, completely, finally”

p. 203

“Is that why we like the law so much- to give us some control?” asked Mack

“It is much worse that that,” resumed Sarayu. “It grants you the power to judge others and feel superior to them. You believe that you are living to a higher standard than those you judge. Enforcing rules, especially in its more subtle expressions like responsibility and expectation, is a vain attempt to create certainty out of uncertainty… Rules cannot bring freedom; they only have the power to accuse”

p. 206-7

“But,” Mack wasn’t convinced. “But don’t you want us to set priorities? You know: God first, then whatever, followed by whatever?”

“The trouble with living by priorities,” Sarayu spoke, “is that it sees everything as a hierarchy, a pyramid, and you and I have already had that discussion. If you put God at the top, what does that really mean and how much is enough? How much time do you give me before you can go on about the rest of your day, the part that interests you so much more?”

Papa again interrupted. “You see, Mackenzie, I don’t just want a piece of you and piece of your life. Even if you were able, which you are not, to give me the biggest piece, that is not what I want. I want all of you and all of every part of you and your day.”

Jesus now spoke again. “Mack, I don’t want to be the first among a list of values; I want to be at the center of everything. When I live in you, then together we can live through everything that happens to you. Rather than a pyramid, I want to be the center of a mobile, where everything in your life- your friends, family, occupation, thoughts, activities- is connected to me but moves with the wind, in and out and back and forth, in an incredible dance of being.”

“And I,” concluded Sarayu, “I am the wind.:

p. 207

repeated elsewhere: “Nothing is ritual.”

p. 235

Sarayu interrupted him. “Mack, if anything matters then everything matters. Because you are important, everything you do is important. Every time you forgive, the universe changes; every time you reach out and touch a heart or a life, the world changes; with every kindness and service, seen or unseen, my purposes are accomplished and nothing will ever be the same again.”

The Shack- Quotes to Ponder

   Posted by: matt    in Uncategorized

Thoughts to ponder from The Shack before I abandon it entirely

p. 95

Papa “The Truth shall set you free and the Truth has a name; he’s over in the woodshop right now covered in sawdust. Everything is about him. And freedom is a process that happens inside a relationship with him. Then all that stuff you feel churnin’ around inside will start to work its way out”

p. 124

Jesus picked up the conversation. “As the crowning glory of Creation, you were made in our image, unencumbered by structure and free to simply ‘be’ in relationship with me and one another. If you had truly learned to regard each other’s concerns as significant as your own, there would be no need for hierarchy.”

….

Sarayu “We have come full circle, back to one of my initial statements: You humans are so lost and damaged that to you it is almost incomprehensible that relationship could exist apart from hierarchy. So you think that God must relate inside a hierarchy like you do. But we do not.”

Papa “we want to share with you the love and joy and freedom and light that we already know within ourself. We created you, the human, to be in face-to-face relationship with us, to join our circle of love. As difficult as it will be for you to understand, everything that has taken place is occurring exactly according to this purpose, without violating choice or will.”

p.125

Papa “There are millions of reasons to allow pain and hurt and suffering rather than to eradicate them, but most of those reasons can only be understood within each person’s story. I am not evil. You are the ones who embrace fear and pain and power and rights so steadily in your relationships. But your choices are not stronger than my purposes, and I will use every choice you make for the ultimate good and the most loving outcome.

p. 126

like trying to look at a parade through a knothole; flaw= you don’t trust that I am good

p.134-5

About people who think the Garden of Eden is a myth: “Their mistake isn’t fatal. Rumors of glory are often hidden inside of what many consider myths and tales.”

Mack “I guess I would say that something is good when I like it- when it makes me feel good or gives me a sense of security. Conversely, I’d call something evil that causes me pain or costs me something that I want.”

“So it’s pretty subjective then.”

“I guess it is.”

“And how confident are you in your ability to discern what indeed is good for you, or what is evil?”

“To be honest,” Mack said, “ […] I’m not really sure I have any logical ground for deciding what is actually good or evil, except how something or someone affects me […] All seems quite self-serving and self-centered, I suppose. And my track record isn’t very encouraging either. Some things I initially thought were good turned out to be horribly destructive, and some things that I thought were evil, well, they turned out…”

He hesitated before finishing his thought, but Sarayu interrupted. “Then it is you who determines good and evil. And to make things more confusing, that which you determine to be good will change over time and circumstance. And then beyond that and even worse, there are billions of you each determining what is good and what is evil. So when your good and evil clashes with your neighbor’s, fights and ensue and even wars break out… And if there is no reality of good that is absolute, then you have lost all basis for judging. It is just language, and one might as well exchange the word good for evil.”

p. 136

“I am Light and I am Good. I am Love and there is no darkness in me.. Light and Good actually exist. So, removing yourself from me will result in evil because apart from me, you can only draw upon yourself. That is death because you have separated yourself from me: Life… [It could mean] that in one instance, the good may be the presence of cancer or the loss of income- or even a life.”
